I need a linear converter but you don't make one!

The main advantage of linear converters or "droppers" is that they are cheap to produce and require little equipment or expertise. Basically you can build them in a spare bedroom, we used to!

Now we can make a sophisticated, surface mount, switch mode unit with low quiescent current, 93% efficiency, with a mean time between failures of 162 years, at a lower cost than we can build a "dropper". So we can offer you better value for money than the guy in the spare bedroom, a shame but true.

"Droppers" are big, heavy and hot. They must be mounted in a well ventilated area to keep them cool.
